FIT OUT FOR TRETHOWANS SOLICITORS PRACTICE.

BRIEF
To relocate the practice from a traditional high street location into a new facility on the eastern outskirts of Salisbury of 24,000sq ft. The space had to reflect the traditional values of Trethowans with its wide range of client types but at the same time create a working environment that above all promoted and encouraged communication between the various departments within the company. This change in culture would require a change in environment. "A chance comment by the coffee machine may lead to selling more of the practices services to existing clients" was seen as an important goal to be achieved.

The attraction and retention of high calibre personnel was also a factor in creating a quality workspace and a great place to work. The design was carefully balanced to recognise the significant changes to working life. Through listening carefully to peoples' needs and indeed their concerns, a palette of workspace types was evolved from cellular meeting rooms, open plan, meeting spaces, quiet rooms, study areas to partial and full open plan work spaces. The use of stunning images in large scale photomurals was seen as an important element in providing a feeling of 'well being' and stimulating vistas within the workplace. All of this is linked to productivity and as emerging recent research is showing, a good working environment has a direct effect on an individual's productivity.

The choice of high quality recyclable materials further underpin these goals. All the above was achieved within a challenging budget.

These friendly and not so friendly hand gestures are actually coat hooks/wall art called 'Hand Jobs.' Created by the designers Thelermont Hupton (the design partnership between David Hupton and Yve Thelermont) They are the size of an actual hand and come in various different gestures and colours. Cast in composite materials, they have a lacquer finish and look absolutely fantastic.

They always become a real talking point and are definitely guaranteed to liven up a boring wall.

Now this is interesting - BMWs concept car has a fabric skin stretched over a wire mesh and is controlled by hydraulics. The single piece of fabric wrinkles as you open the door just like skin. Apparently the outer skin can move and do things a fixed metal skin can't, like morphing into more aerodynamic shapes. The headlights have been designed so they work like eyelids - I would love to see this on Top Gear being put to the test - although I think Jeremy might have to fight Batman for the first go!

It always amazes me what we can do with design - and for once I am left without words - it is so far away from 'the norm'. Will we all be driving fabric cars in the future? Will car washes become redundant as we wash our fabric cars in our washing machines?

This product is the Dulux Paint Pod. To get a full demonstration visit http://www.dulux.co.uk/products/paintpod/index.jsp. We think this is a great idea. Painting to me is messy and time consuming - well with this new product from Dulux it might not have to be anymore. But will painting be the same if you are not covered head to toe in paint for the duration of the task? um...YES and Will we still feel we have accomplished as much if it is a no hassle experience? I think so!

Mains powered PaintPod pumps paint to your splatter free roller. It is self cleaning and wastes very little paint. If anyone has actually used the PaintPod please let us know what you think - is it really as good as it seems? Will painting be an easy, unstressful job from now on?
