 A word from the chef

Summer is great from a chef's point of view because with so much variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables available the menu's just fall into placeIn fact the hardest thing about creating this menu was deciding what to leave off!

Our home smoked mackerel will be making a reappearance in the form of our very own take on a salad "noise" with fine green beans, new potatoes, quails eggs and tomatoes.

Duck and lamb will join beef on the menu as our main course meat selection with duck breast and a spring roll of confit duck, with beetroot and grelot onions.

The new seasons' lamb will be served with summer beans and a fresh ratatouille of vegetables. I'm pleased to say that the response from our customers so far to these dishes has been very strong.

Peas and mint make an excellent pairing demonstrated in our chilled fresh Pea soup with Cardo cheese nuggets which I hope will be delighting our vegetarian customers, along with a summer casserole of beans with Childwickbury goats cheese and herb dumplings.

After only a short time on the menu we can see that our Raspberry tart with Nutmeg ice cream is already a winner, although it will face strong competition from the new desserts making an appearance in the next few weeks - soon to be revealed!

I hope you all enjoy the new summer menu and welcome any feedback and comments you have!

A word about wine

  By Jane Rawlings

What better way to start off a summer Sunday lunch than with a refreshing glass of Pimms?  Alternatively we have delicous Thatchers Prince William or Dabinett cider to celebrate great, British, summery drinks!

Our wine list will also see a couple of additions this summer with a new white wine, made by Michel Torino as introduced opposite, and I have also finally got my hands on a really good Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon ~ Echeverria Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2006 which we will be selling by the glass and by the bottle (£19.99 per bottle, £5.50 per glass)

Wine of the month:

Collection Torrentes de Cafayate, Michel Torino, Argentina.

£16.99 per bottle, £5.25 by the glass

This wine is made on the Torino estate in the Cafayate Vaelly in the North of Argentina, home to our ever popular Malbec.

The dry sunny conditions seem to suit the Torrentes grape variety which originally comes from North West Spain, and is fast becoming to white Argentinean wines what Malbec is to their red wiens.

The wine is aromatic with a smooth, creamy texture, hints of blossom and elderflower not unlike the flavours found in Gewurztraminer but with a bit more body.

These fresh flavours make for a great aperitif wine, but we will be drinking it alongside the Risotto of Summer vegetables and the Cannelloni of corn fed, free-range chicken (and probably with a lot of other things too!!).

The F-Word search for the Best Local Restaurant

Some of our customers brought to our attention that the F-Word is launching a search to find Britain's Best Local restaurant and asked us whether we would be happy to be nominated, and if successful possibly be featured on the forthcoming series in the autumn.

We of course would be absolutely delighted if we made it to the
short-list, especially as there is a category for British restaurants and we are very grateful to those who have nominated us for it so far.

If you would like to find out more about it, or would like to add your nomination if you feel we are deserving, here is a link to their site:

The F-Word search for Best Local Restaurant

The nomintation deadline is Friday 17th July so there's not much time left, but we would appreciate any additional nominations if you think we are worthy!
